With 89 Stunning exquisite HAND COLOURED plates within the period 1820 to 1821. Plates 2161 to 2250 inclusive with one plate substituted (1771 for 2190) and one missing (2248). The brightness, quality and vibrancy of the colours of the plates have to be seen to be believed. Index included. Rebound in tan cloth with black and gold leather labels. Cut without any significant loss to text and plates - 5.5" - 9" Donated to library and stored at the correct humidity and temperature and then released for sale in 1998. Front Pastedown contains library plate but no other marks on title page or plates. The volumes appear not to have been used which may explain their immaculate and stunning condition. The magazine was founded in 1787 by William Curtis and has continued publication to the present day. 'The reputation of the magazine has always resided in the accuracy of its portrayal of plants.' Curtis' principal artists were William Kilburn + James Sowerby and Sydenham T. Edwards. These skilled artists worked with him for 28 years and it was they who were responsible for most of the plates that appeared in the magazine. From October 1834 Walter Fitch became the main artist - a post that he would hold for 40 years. 'In the confident hands of a botanical artist like W.H. Fitch lithographs have an immediacy and spontaneity encountered usually only in original works of art.' This volume comes from an advertised complete run covering the first 45 years. On checking we find that there was in fact a gap in the run. Vol 46 for 1819 runs from plate 2023 to 2104 inclusive and is our book ref 4982. Complete correct with index. The binding of this volume (our book reference 4983) has vol 47showing on the spine for 1820 but is in fact a combination of 1820 and 1821. The plates start at 2161 through to 2188 for 1820. So 2105 to 2160 inclusive are missing. They then run form 2189 through to 2250. In fact the full run for 1821 is plates 2189 to 2272 inclusive. In that run the text for 2190 is faced by plate 1771. Also the publishers made an error with the printing of the plate numbers for 2247, 8 and 9. 2247 was printed as 2148 and contains a manuscript change to 2247 (this matches the text). 2247 is included in this book but excludes the text (I can provide a quality copy) Plate 2248 was incorrectly printed with 2249 on it and this is completely missing form this volume. Again I can copy the original plate and text from another volume). 2249 is correctly numbered by the publishers and is included in this book. So the book for sale covers part 1820 and 1821 with plates 2161 to 2250 inclusive subject to the omissions listed. The book contains the index for 1820. A copy of the index for 1821 can be provided if required. Our website contains 4 pictures of this book. Please note that the pink tinge to the paper is a white balance error in the camera as the paper is in fact off white. Stunning quality of plates.
