Description / Information:
This spectacular book is in its original contemporary binding that has been cleaned and refurbished. The boards are three quarter leather, with beautiful marble in the centre. . The spine has 5 raised bands, with Title in gold marked 'Illustrated Exhibitor 1851'. This book comprises 30 parts, which were issued between June 7th 1851 and December 27th 1851. It also includes an introduction of 44 pages with lists of the awards of the juries and an introduction. As well as all the usual manufactures, the book includes many interesting plates of engineering and transport interest such as Beeching's, Teasdale's, Plenty's and the Balsa Lifeboats, Helley's catamaran Mr Bain's and Mr Bakwell's telegraphs, Machine for manufacturing yields of weaving looms, locomotive engines, lathe for turning the tires and bosses of railway wheels. The book contains a series of articles on the building of the Great Exhibition with good illustrations. In addition this book explains the building of the exhibit. There is a fascinating plate on page 44 of Aerial's Girdle - a light locomotive engine on four wheels with carriages attached. Page 46 shows the building committee's design which was superseded by Paxton's design with the committee's approval. We also have photos of some of the illustrations. Generally pages are clean but with some foxing to the end papers. The boards are clean with some slight chipping to the top and bottom of the spine. Corners very slightly knocked. This is generally an excellent book. Buying more than one book will save on postage costs. We have split our books into 70 + categories.
