Description / Information:
A truly fascinating book with all the latest news as at 1868. There is a fold out plate showing the proposed railway from Toronto to Vancouver. Another map shows the lines of railway in India. A railway over the Alps was proposing technical difficulties at the time due to the gradients. Mr Fells patent centre rail engine is shown in two fascinating illustrations. This had four horizontal wheels engaging upon a central rail, which on gradients of 1 in 12 and at slow speeds gave both protection from derailment and sufficient adhesion to haul a train. It was used after tests on the Mount Cervis railway. There is a fold out plate of the Metropolitan railway printed in two colours. Also, there is a serious proposal with fold out plates and costings for the proposed Channel Tunnel Railway, which was actively being progressed at that time. This volume was part of Paul Edward's collection and bears his bookplate. The content and plates are in virtually as new condition. It has been rebound in ¾ blue morocco with 5 raised bands and gold decoration with blue boards.
