Description / Information:
The bible of its day on how the Country Gentleman should run his farm and estate. Based on the original papers of Thomas Hale (who had an estate near Badminton in Gloucestershire) with additions from Colonel Stevenson and Messrs Randolph, Hawkins, storey, Osborne, turner and others. Contemporary full panelled leather with spine relayed and corners repaired using matching calf. Six raised bands and original calf name label containing bright original gold. The pattern of the figuring of the decoration of the 6 panels is still discernable but most of the gold is fairly faint and there is some loss. The book contains the book plate of Oughtrington Hall. The original end papers are followed by a copper engraved frontis. This has one closed tear 2 ½ inches long that has been repaired. The pages are in generally very good clean condition with the minimum of age darkening. There are very occasional contemporary comments in the margins which have NOT been removed as they add interest to the book. Page 119 has an inserted copy from the agricultural journal of September 6th 1847 on flax cultivation plus text and marginal hand annotations. The 719 pages are followed by engraved plates mostly featuring several figures. The plates are; plan of a foundation for stacking hey, plan of the dung-pit comprising of 5 images, a plate comprising of 5 images of farming scenes, a plate showing 7 different ploughs, another plate showing ploughs and 2 horses with 12 images, 2 plates of plants comprising of 24 images, plates showing the orchard plantation plus farm house, large fold out plate showing plans and elevations of a ventilating granary, and 2 further plates of plants comprising of 29 images. The plates are generally fairly clean, the last 3 having more marks. The 2nd plate has 2 small closed marginal tears. Buying more than one book will save on postage costs.
