Description / Information:
Packed weight = 03.75kg. THIS BOOK IS SOLD. PLEASE do NOT order through abe before contacting us direct, as the standard abe postage rates do NOT apply. Also because of the value this book will need insuring si we need to discuss options before a firm order is placed. In excellent condition overall. 3 coloured plates, 20 black and white plates, 6 plans\ charts 1 folding chart and one folding map. Some foxing to the fold out map. Generally little foxing inside. Fantastic memoirs by a great explorer. This expedition was privately funded as the Admiralty refused to support Ross after the failure of his first expedition. They survived four winters In the Artic and Ross discovered the North Magnetic Pole. Fine full leather boards. Full leather spine with five raised bands and red title label. This lovely book has been in our private collection for some years. However as it is not a mainstream part of the collection It has been decided to offer it for sale. Our website has a larger image showing the lovely full leather binding. I have no date for this but the binding is firm and strong. This image is available to abe customers on request. This is a lovely copy of this classic work and covering as it does discoveries made in the years 1829 to 1833 inclusive follows on very rapidly after the event as it was published in 1835. It starts with a lovely clean b/w frontis plate "Victoria Harbour". The title page has a faint inscription in pencil which I have not removed in case it is important historically. The following page is dedicated to King William the IV. There is then an apology to the subscribers explaining the problems of printing and engraving leading to the delay in publication. Strange bearing in mind the extremely short period of less than two years! The large foldout map is without loss and contains 4 lovely little vignettes showing icebergs and land formations. Facing page 232 is a lovely full page crisp generally very clean COLOURED view of Felix Harbour". There are no tears or creases. Facing page 401 is n engraving of Graham's Valley in similar condition. Facing page 518 is an engraving of "Copeland Islands and Sheriff's Harbour showing sledges, dogs and people plus a tent encampment. Again in similar condition. Facing page 595 is an engraving of the Victory showing a rowing boat in the foreground pushing off from the ice with five people aboard. The map plate facing page 608 included two lovely elevational views of either side of Victoria Harbour. Facing page 656 there is a fine engraved full page plate of Somerset House showing the encampment, tents, supplies and three boats with numerous people at work. Same condition as the one facing page 232. There are plates showing sections and plans of Somerset House. What we like about the plates is that they include people about their tasks. These descriptions give a good feel for the book if you have not previously seen a copy. If there is something very specific you need to know before making your decision please do contact us. Overall this book falls within our excellent rather than very good category. The text pages are generally clean and bright and the page corners are crisp. We have not found any tears but obviously have not checked every single page. For customers prepared to pay by cheque please contact us and we will bear the cost of postage and insurance.
