'The desire to honour Livingstone's memory and his own fervid aspirations to resolve Africa's remaining geographical secrets now drew Stanley inexorably to the continent. The journey he envisaged was on the grandest possible scale, and journalism offered the financial resources, in the form of 6000 pounds from both the New York Herald and the Daily Telegraph. He planned to cross equatorial Africa from Zanzibar to the mouth of the Congo (Zaire) River and during the journey to clarify the remaining questions regarding the Nile's source, to map all the great lakes of the interior and to trace the Congo form its origins down river to the Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore he aimed to complement these geographical pursuits with efforts to introduce Christianity in Central Africa. Remarkably, between 1874 and 1877, Stanley managed to achieve virtually all these feats.' (Delpar p. 408) Buying more than one book will save on postage costs.
