Description / Information:
MAGNIFICENT All 15 volumes. A truly wonderful set in matching contemporary full calf with gold decoration. First three volumes published 1758 and described as the second edition. Vol4 published 1758 and described as the third edition. The final volume of the third edition is vol 11 published in 1760. The last four volume are "The Continuation of the complete history of England" published in 1760 and covers the period up to and including 1760. These are described as Vols one to four of the Continuation. All volumes have the private armorial bookplate of Thomas Mifsing and are numbered on their spines Vols I to 15. Smollett's History became a standard reference during the second half of the eighteenth century. The contents are generally very crisp and clean and have a wonderful feel to them. Turning to pages 102 and127 of vol 14 I find two foldout maps - the West Indies and Caribbean (yes the spelling is correct!) Islands of America and they are crisp and clean with immaculate folds and no splits - just as they would have appeared in 1760 - wonderful! Vol 1 has a lovely foldout plate in similar condition 'The noble behaviour of the British King Caractacus before the Emperor Claudius in Rome The large folding map of England and Wales in volume one is in similar clean + crisp and generally excellent condition except that it has one closed tear which has been repaired and a small repair to the plain edge at bottom of map. The end papers are in excellent order and there are no inscriptions. The boards have gilt border and are mostly in excellent condition. The decorated spines with maroon title and five raised bands are in mainly good condition although a little worn here and there. See the photographs at the above link. We have selected three plates at random to give a feel for this splendid set. Overall they look stunning on the bookshelf and 'feel' like contemporary eighteenth century books. This set is very heavy and MUST be insured so international surface mail is not an option. The set is NOT covered by the standard ABE postage charges, so please contact us for details BEFORE ORDERING. For our terms, please click on 'Bianco Library' below.
