Description / Information:
2 volumes of this remarkable work. Volume II part the first is a History of the Rape of Arundel. Volume II Part the Second is History of the Rape of Bramber. The Preface to Volume II Part the First states the rarity of these books: 'The first volume? of which five hundred copies were printed, was published in the year 1815. Eighty copies were disposed of, and between Twenty and Thirty were sold afterwards; when a fire which consumed the premises of the Printers, destroyed all the remaining copies. The fate of the First Part of the Second Volume was still more unfortunate. At the time of the fire above-mentioned, Sixty copies had been sent out to be stitched and were thus saved.' Volume II Part the First is in generally very clean condition internally with some occasional light foxing. Fantastic plates. This extremely rare book has been completely rebound in fine three quarter leather bindings. Fine cloth boards. 6 raised bands on very bright spine. Volume II Part the Second is relatively clean inside with a small amount of foxing throughout. With an amazing fold out map of the Rape of Bramber and other amazing plates including early colour plates. Fine plate of New Shoreham Church. Believed to be contemporary full leather boards. These are now a little worn especially to the edges. Vellum spine believed to have been rebound in Victorian times. Bright red nameplate on spine.
