Description / Information:
In very good condition overall. Internally, mostly very clean - foxing largely confined to first few and last few pages. Printed on a thick paper which is very easily split. Small closed tear to bottom of pages 20 and facing page 62 (c 1 cm) and two small tears to the bottom of page 38 (c 1 cm). Corners to pages generally crisp without creases. Excellent plates - 24 in colour. All edges to pages gold. Original refurbished boards in very good clean condition. Blue cloth boards with excellent gold illustrations on front board with the extra blind stamped decoration finished in black on the cover. Some copies do not have this. Also some copies have the central panel in two colours and these variations are in addition to the different basic cloth colours! Slightly dulled blue on spine - see illustration at link above. See McLean Victorian Book Design illustration facing page 205. Here you will see the Groombridge name and the Humming Bird frontis. Griffin bound the Cameo of Emperor Augustus as frontis and Humming Birds is facing page 27 (correct place). The bindings come in DIFFERENT colours and detail so if you are collecting all binding variants there are quite a few to find! Date is c1870 for both Griffin and Groombridge. The books are as far as I am aware identical in content and plates (different choice of frontis) as all the PRINTING was done by "B Fawcett, Engraver and Printer, Driffield" (Manchester). Buying more than one book will save on postage costs. We have split our books into 70 + categories.
