Description / Information:
The railway wonders of the world were illustrated with many colour plates and photographs comprising 760 pages with 24 colour plates and over 300 photographs. This was issued serially in 24 fortnightly parts from April 1913 to March 1914. This should not be confused with Talbot's 'Railways of the world', which were issued between 26th March, and the 19th November 1924. The parts could be bought as bound volumes and were issued in different bindings. One is bright red cloth with blocked gold decoration. This set was issued in ¾ leather with quality marbled endpapers and matching marbled boards. Printed on art paper, these volumes comprised numerous well-illustrated and readable articles concerning the railways of the world at the time of the First World War. One article about the opening up of Canada shows a picture of the old Suspension Bridge across the Niagara Gorge being rebuilt as a single spin arched bridge. The suspension cables were used to take the load of the formwork to construct the bridge. There is an article on 'Remarkable Ariel Railways' in various parts of the world and ropeways spanning as much as 2600 feet between supports. The spines have become a little scuffed and damaged and so these two volumes have rebound with smart leather spines with five raised bands and gold decoration. They look very smart on the bookshelf.
