In very good condition overall. This is the 1852 volume. The Gardeners' chronicle. This was founded by John Lindley, Joseph Paxton, Charles Wentworth-Dilke and William Bradbury (the printer of Nature Printing fame) in 1841. Lindley edited the horticultural part of the journal until his death in 1865. This ensured maintenance of a high standard which earned the journal its international repute - the horticultural equivalent of the Times for social and political matters. The magazine was called the Gardeners' Chronicle from 1841 to the end of 1843 when it changed its name to the Gardeners' Chronicle and Architectural Gazette. This successful weekly paper flourishes to this day. This provides practical and scientific information on a diversity of horticultural matters. The Chronicle summarised the proceedings of horticultural and botanical societies, provided domestic and foreign political news, together with market prices of fruit, garden memoranda, entomological articles, records of new plants etc and forthright editorials in which Lindley campaigned successfully, for example, against the tax on glass and its excessive high cost, which impeded glasshouse development. The tax was repealed in 1845 and during the next ten years the cost of glass fell to a quarter of its former price. The Chronicle also advertised plants and sundries for sale and situations of employment wanted and vacant. This volume is a wealth of information for gardeners and includes a whole year of the Gardener's Chronicle. There is some foxing and light marking, but this does not detract from the text or illustrations. There are a number of illustrations, mostly fairly small but often very intricate. There is a neat private bookplate on the front paste down. Cloth boards are in largely very good condition with one or two marks. Contemporary leather spine and corners are in largely very good condition. There is some wear and tear, due to the age of the volume. Bright black nameplate with gold lettering on spine.
