Plus 'Barber's picturesque illustrations of the Isle of Wight comprising views of every object of interest on the island engraved from original drawings accompanied by historical and topographical illustrations' Published by Simkin Marshall in 1834. 110pp including index. Includes 40 plates, a foldout map plus a vignette of Cowes on the title page. Fold out map is of the island and is in excellent condition with some foxing.. Text pages of both parts internally generally very clean and bright. Binding generally very good with leather spine and corners - thought to be contemporary. Five raised bands on spine with gold decoration. All edges to pages marbled. Very good boards. See photo. Both parts have wonderful quality engraved plates vary from very clean to some foxing (mainly marginal). See photographs for details. The majority of the plates are unusually clean as most copies of this book normally suffer from more significant foxing. . We have 5 pictures of this book available on request including both medium and large images. This description relies upon being read in conjunction with these photographs. Please note that the shading at the top of the second and third detailed photos is due to the shadow when taking the photos and the paper is in fact uniformly white. The second detailed photo also over exaggerates the foxing. As I look at this plate for the semaphore at Portsmouth it is actually better than the picture. Many of the plates are in the condition shown in the first picture. Overall a truly lovely volume.
