Its discontinuance lead William's Ayres (1815-1875; nurseryman, specialist in Pelargoniums; holder of patents for hot houses ) and Thomas Moore (1821 - 1887 gardener of Regents Park, London 1844-1847; curator of the Botanic Garden, Chelsea from 1848; author of many books on ferns and orchids and botany) to launch the Gardeners' Magazine of Botany. This rare magazine was superbly presented and only ran from January 1850 to December 1851. Its aim was to furnish the amateur and professional gardener with trustworthy information on subjects connected with the science of his art. A higher objective was aimed at the physiological principles on which the gardening art was founded. In the concluding remarks of 1851, the authors state that "the ground they had taken had been too high and that they had overlooked that the professional gardeners to whom the publication was principally addressed did not always possess the monthly half crown to meet the price of the periodical. Also that those seeking scientific information and technical botany are more limited in number than anticipated." As a result, the publication terminated in December 1851. It was beautifully illustrated with primarily coloured full page plates primarily of flowers but also including fruits (5 coloured full page plates) and insects (2 coloured full page plates). There were also 11 superb full page uncoloured drawings of ferns. The text was profusely illustrated with many excellent and varied wood engravings including plants, garden layouts, garden features and garden structures. This superb set has been in my private collection for many years and is amongst my favourites. It is now available because it has been replaced by another set in similar condition but in even more spectacular contemporary full leather binding. Detailed Condition Statement: Matching full leather contemporary bindings with minor professional refurbishment - bound in 3 volumes. 5 raised bands bound by Culkin and Budd - Booksellers to her Majesty, 18 Pall Mall. 4 gilt motifs on spine plus 2 gilt titles. Gilt lining to both front and rear boards of all volumes plus blind stamped decoration. All bindings tight and sound. Gilt finish to all edges of boards. Crisp corners to all boards and pages. No bumping. All page edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. No inscriptions. Volume I: January to June 1850. Coloured full page frontis designed by H. N. Humphries followed by half title and full title. 34 full page coloured plates of flowers plus 2 of insects featuring 11 insects in total and 127 superb wood engravings. Light spotting to plain endpapers preceding frontis. A few very light marks on frontis. Light marks on preface and index of illustrations. Generally the plates are all in superb order in generally bright and clean condition and hand coloured to the highest standard. There are no folds or tears as far as I can see. The paper is generally very clean without signs of any finger marks. As to foxing, they vary from completely clean to the occasional light spot. For example, Calceolaria Flexuosa facing pg 33 is without any significant marks whereas the plate facing page 41 has one small mark above the coloured plate and that facing page 145 has extremely small single mark alongside the title. Veriesea Speciosa facing page 217 is superb, clean and bright. The two plates of Victoria Regia have between them 5 light small spots. A feature of these books is the high quality of engravings in the text. For example on pgs 88 & 89, there are two drawings of Loch Ness; one from the black rock and the other showing the Fall of Foweys. Pgs 132 & 133 show 3 lovely drawings of rustic terraces accompanying an article by Noel Humphries. There is an interesting plant layout drawing on pg 199. On page 220 & 221, there are drawings illustrating the illuminated prayer book of Anne of Brittany and the Terrace of Heidelberg again accompanying a Humphries' article. Page 231 includes a drawing of the trough containing Victoria Regia. There are 4 lovely drawings of fountains on pgs 278 & 279. One of the best full colour plates is of Tulip Dr Horner facing page 305. There is light spotting to the index pages and endpapers to the end of the volume. I-xii to 323pp. Volume II: July to December 1850. This is even better than the other 2 volumes in terms of being almost entirely clear of foxing. This has 30 coloured plates including 4 superb fruits: Strawberry Prince Arthur facing page 65 and Nectarine Stanwick, Plum Jefferson and Nutmeg. There is a superb plate of Nurtis Tomentossa. One of the best plates is Gladiolus Natalensis subject to one light spot in the margin of the picture. 96 wood engravings. Numerous excellent in text engravings including a hardy fernery redleaf on page 44, geometric canal or tank for water plants on page 27, strawberries on page 65 rose garden layout full page on page 93, Pelargonium House on pages 198 &199, heating systems page 285, plant spraying on page 221. Light spotting to last few pages including index. Title page has one spot. I-xii plus 300pp. Volume III: January to December 1851. Plates similar in condition to volume 1. 38 coloured plates excluding the fern that is listed as having a coloured plate but in reality is one of the listed black and white plates. There is a superb plate of Crocus Vernus variety Leedsii which is sparkling, bright and clean without any marks. The star in this volume faces page 5 and is 'Grapes' including Mill Hill Hamburg and Dutch Hamburg - this plate is clean, bright and vibrant. 99 wood engravings plus 80 on ferns including 11 full page uncoloured plates of ferns. The index refers to two page number for Platyloma Atropurpurea. There is a single plate facing page 132 as called for and the second page reference relates to the text. Drawings include tropical conservatory on page 1, another conservatory on page 3, theory and practice of pruning - pages 310-312. Heavy foxing to free end paper through to and including lists of plants and plates. Moderate foxing to pages 325 & 327. Rear endpaper foxed but otherwise, only the occasional light spotting. I-XII plus 339pp We intend to have a number of photographs of this book available on our website.
