Description / Information:
Volume VI of the 16 volume set. In very good condition. Includes 48 exquisite hand coloured plates as called for. Pages in good crisp condition with no creasing to corners and generally no tears and splits. The edge definition of the plants illustrated are generally clean, clear and precise. Very little foxing to plates. Contemporary green half calf, marbled spine with four raised bands, gilt lines and lettering. The excellent contemporary bindings are of the same style and colour of volumes 1 - 4 which we understand originated from the same library. Very famous and beautifully illustrated periodical. The boards are green cloth in very good condition with an attractive embossed pattern. (Photograph on application). This set has seen very little use throughout its long life. The general condition is among the best for this particular volume in the past 20 years. For those collectors fortunate enough to have the later volumes (9 - 16) the plates in all the earlier volumes that we have seen or know about are slightly less bright and vibrant. This in no way represents any defect - it is merely a general observation by those of us knowledgeable in these rare and splendid magazines that conditions change during the development of the magazine. See illustration of one plate. Other illustrations of plates and the bindings are available. Please bear in mind that these have been compressed for ease of email transmission and are only meant to give a general impression of the excellent condition of this volume. Unlike the Curtis botanical magazine, for those of you unfamiliar with the Paxtons, they contain more than just descriptions of the plants and include a number of line illustrations of plants, buildings, features etc. This book has become available through the collector acquiring a full 16 volume set in matching bindings. The replacement set, reckoned within trade circles to be the best to be offered to the market in recent years are generally in similar condition to the volume available here.
