One of the greatest botanical plate books. 60 stunning full page hand coloured plates drawn and engraved by William Clark, dated 1825 or 1826. Reference: Nissen BBI 1414; fine flower books p.121. Title, index, 120 pages. The clarity and colouring and atmosphere of these hand coloured plates is of the highest order of excellence. Even Hooker's Himalayan Plants with its superb Walter Fitch plates is rivalled by plate 50: Magnolia Pureurea. What it particularly interesting about the text is that each specimen is attributed, for example, the magnolia flowered against the Greenhouse at Coombewood, the seat of the Earl of Liverpool. I know of no better rendition of Aquilegia Canandensis Gracilis, plate 55. As a collector of botanical plate books, this is one of my favourites. Plates include: Verbena Lamberti, Cassia Odorata, papaver Nudicaule Coccinea, Lilium Pomponium, Robinia Hispida, Potentila Nepalensis, Oenothera Missourensis, Paeonia Moutan (double page). Exceptional ¾ leather binding with 5 raised bands to spine. Bright gold lettering and lining. Not contemporary with book but no binders name or date but possibly dates from around 1911. Bears the personal bookplate of Herbert Standen on front paste down; no inscriptions. All page edges gold. All page corners without folds or creases. The plates are generally clean and bright without browning. There is one small spot of foxing on plates 34, 45 and 50 and the very slightest hint of a mark on one or two other plates. The only one with any significant foxing which is to the top quarter of the pagers is plate 44 but this is light in colour. (Also see comment regarding Plate 1) There are the occasional marks to text pages but these are light. There are a few marks to title page and index plus description of plate 1 where there has been a few scattered marks extending to plate 1. Buying more than one book will save on postage costs. We have split our books into 70 + categories. We have 6 photos of this book, available to abe customers on request. This description is to be read in conjunction with these photographs.
