Description / Information:
A Botanical Gem with James Andrews hands coloured plates in its original contemporary cloth binding. This is one of the McIntosh trilogy (the others are the orchard and the flower garden) The flower garden is by far the most common The green house is rare and highly sought after. It included lists of beautiful and exotic plants with directions on there cultivation. It is split into 15 chapters including the conservatory (including technical information on positioning, watering Etc.), succulent house, bulb house, camellia house, geranium house, the orchid house, the orengeary Etc. All three were bound in green embossed cloth with gold decoration to both boards and the spine. After 160 years most of the cloth bindings have become brittle and the glue from the bindings means that the spines are normally darker than the boards. Unusually, the contemporary boards and spine of this copy are in very good condition. All of the gold decoration is reasonably bright. There is a little wear to the head and foot of the spine but no loss. The Spine is a little darker in colour as usual. The coloured plates are generally bright there are 16 plates plus a title vignette and a spectacular frontis piece of succulent plants making 18 in total. All page edges are gold. Original yellow end papers are clean. All corners are crisp. 416 pages. Scattered foxing to text. Some of the plates have foxing particularly around the edges but the colours are bright. The title page is with the vignette dated 1838. This is followed by an addition title page dated 1840. The preface is dated 1840.
